Episode 94 – Prof. Paul Lever – CEO – Mining3

Prof Paul Lever was appointed the CEO of Mining3 in May 2012. He is also the Professor of Mining at the University of Queensland.

Paul has extensive research experience in the fields of robotic and automated mining systems, smart mining machines and systems and intelligent data analysis techniques. He has worked on projects that include intelligent control algorithms for an automated (robotic) excavator and developing the science of bucket/material interactions to improve the performance of large excavators.

He held several positions at Mining3 prior to becoming CEO that included Research Director, Vice Present for Business Development and Program Leader. Before joining Mining3 in July 2000 he was head of the Mining and Geological Engineering department at the University of Arizona.

Prof Lever obtained a BSc in Mining Engineering from the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, and received his MSc and Ph.D. in Mining Engineering from the Colorado School of Mines.

Paul lives in Brisbane with his family.

Page Maxson – Former CEO – Australia Pacific LNG

3255b45Page Maxson Former CEO of Australia Pacific LNG and Non Executive Director Queensland Symphony Orchestra  talks the importance of community, following the rules, clean energy and finding a home away from home.

Page Maxson is the Former CEO of Australia Pacific LNG, the Director of the American Chamber of Commerce in Australia; Chairman of the business advisory council at the Ipswich North Precinct and is on the board of Queensland Symphony Orchestra. Page joined ConocoPhillips in 1988 and worked with the organisation globally for many years, including in Houston, Norway, Indonesia, West Texas and Libya.

Born in Oklahoma in the US in the 1960s, Page was raised as one of five children on a small property. His father was a research engineer at Conoco Phillips and his mother stayed at home to raise the family. After completing high school, Page attended Oklahoma State University and immediately after completing a Bachelor of Science and Civil Engineering moved on to a Masters of Business at the University of Texas. An entrepreneur at heart, Page self funded his way through university by working as a lab technician and with money he had saved from a small but successful agricultural business he began in high school. After completing university, Page worked as a consultant for many years before seeking out an opportunity at Conoco Phillips at the age of 28. Page relocated to Australia and joined Australia Pacific LNG in 2010.

Page is an avid golfer and loves to sail. He last lived in the U.S 17 years ago but plans to retire in the near future and will return to his home in Austin, Texas.

Jim McDonald – Experienced Chairman and Director

Richard has known Jim McDonald for a number of years having built a relationship with him throughout the process of building Arete Executive while Jim moved through a number of different board positions. Jim has played an integral role and been at the forefront of driving the oil and gas industry within Australia for many years, and when the pair sat down for Arete podcast the pair shared an insightful conversation about Jim’s life and career. Jim is currently the Director of IntelliGas Group Inc  in unlisted company which specialises in gas technology and has a number of significant patents for high pressure engine gas.

After a stint working within his family’s retail business as a young man, Jim ventured into the oil and gas industry, spending the majority of his early career with Esso Australia Limited, after joining the company in the 1970s. In 1994, Jim joined AGL first as Managing Director at the Eastern Australian Pipeline Operations and then as Foundations CEO and Managing Director of APA Australia. In 2005, Jim left his executive career to move into a portfolio career and has been an active Company Director and Chairman of organisations such as Hastings Funds Management Limited , Pearlstreet Limited; Director and Chairman of WDS Limited and Chairman of Energy Pipelines CRC. Jim is also a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Jim was born in Traralgan in country Victoria in 1940 and was raised as one of four children after his older brother died in infancy. His father was the local barber and his mother ran a tobacconist and gift shop at the front of her husband’s store. The influence his parents and his early family life had on Jim is central to his conversation with Richard on the podcast; he describes growing up in post-war Australia and being schooled by the Josephite Nuns and later, by the Marist Brothers, as a wonderful time. In his final year of school Jim was planning to study medicine but decided to become a Catholic priest and entered Corpus Christ College Werribee where he completed two years of training. After deciding not to enter the priesthood, Jim returned to Traralgan to work in the family business before kickstarting his career with a small gas business in the Northern Territory.

Dr Fred Hess – Managing Director – PanAust

Fred Hess_169x172_0Dr Fred Hess Managing Director of PanAust talks: Striking gold, finding things you care about, getting noticed and his passion for collecting stamps.

Dr Fred Hess is the Managing Director of PanAust, a copper and gold producer in Laos with pre-development opportunities in Laos, Papua New Guinea, Myanmar and Chile. Fred has over 30 years experience in the mining industry across copper, nickel and gold operations and he has worked throughout Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea. He has held a range of roles within PanAust over 11 years and was promoted to Managing Director  in 2014.

Fred was born in Charleville in Western Queensland where he pent the first five years of his childhood before his parents relocated the family to Brisbane. Fred’s father worked for the Queensland railway and instilled in him to choose a line of work he would always enjoy. During high school Fred’s chemistry teacher inspired him and challenged him to push himself to achieve academically. Excited by the possibilities of chemistry Fred transitioned to university following high school, commencing his undergraduate in engineering with a major in chemistry at the University of Queensland. It marked the beginning of an eight year academic journey for Fred who eventually completed his Phd at UQ’s Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC).

Jeff Forbes – Non Executive Director & Former CFO of Cardno Limited

Former CFO of Cardno Limited & Non Executive Director Jeff Forbes, on his Portfolio Career, Having No Regrets and Seizing Opportunity.

A desire for a change of direction saw Jeff retire from his role as CFO of Cardno Limited in 2013. Since then, Jeff has stayed busy as a Non Executive Director and Chairman of a broad range of organisations and not-for-profits across different industries. Presently, Jeff is a Non Executive Director of Cardno, PWR Holdings, Horizon Housing and Heron Todd White Australia.  He has previously worked as a NED for Affinity Education Group and Exoma Energy, among others.

Jeff grew up as the eldest of three siblings in Cardiff NSW, where he attended the local state high school. He has a Bachelor of Commerce in economics and accounting from the University of Newcastle, which he completed part-time while undertaking a cadetship in marketing at Commonwealth Steel. It wasn’t long before Jeff found his niche in accounting, relocating to Townsville for a role with Queensland Nickel, the rest, as they say, is history.

Jeff is a highly skilled Finance Executive and Company Director with over 30 years of merger and acquisition, equity and capital markets and project development experience. Jeff has extensive expertise in the financing and development of resource projects in both Australia and in the Asia Pacific Region. Prior to first joining Cardno in 2006, Jeff was the CFO, Company Secretary and Executive Director at Highlands Pacific Limited, and has also worked for a number of prominent companies including RTZ (now Rio Tinto), BHP and CSR.

Jeff lives with his wife in Queensland’s beautiful Noosa Heads, where he enjoys the outdoors, staying active and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
